Review: Creeper #1

*Beware the Spoilers*

Creeper #1

Written by: Steve Niles
Art by: Justiano
Story: Beware the Creeper

I was really looking forward to this. A great character, The Creeper...a great writer, Steve Niles...What could go wrong?

Well, the decided that they would restart the Creeper as if he had never existed. Now that always bothers me. It negates everything the other writers have done, and DC is real big into doing that. How many times has the Legion of Superheroes been restarted...3...4? Then there's Byrne and his Doom Patrol. Plus the very nature of the Infinite Crisis stuff is all about wiping the slate clean.

What's funny is that Niles didn't really change anything. Biggest difference is that Jack Ryder was a down and out reporter because he's an asshole, and now he's a successful talk show host because he's an asshole. Otherwise, other than updating the devices which change Ryder into the Creeper to be nanobots, nothing's changed.

You know, I didn't like when they replaced Ronnie as Firestorm with the new guy...but at least it's a new guy. This Creeper is the exact same character, so why the restart. Why not just do a retelling of the origin and then pick up nowdays, or save the origin for a later issue.

2 Worms out of 5...Good character, good art, and nicely told...if it wasn't just another restart wiping out other people's work...
